This month, The Gateway Foundation honored The Peter O’Brien Family with their annual Industry Hero Award at their Illuminating Recovery Gala.
MADO Healthcare’s group of mental health recovery treatment facilities were founded by Peter’s parents more than a half-century ago. Peter and his wife Mimi have three daughters; Peter Jr. (PJ) was their only son. PJ died long before his time, felled at 32 by schizophrenia and health problems that resulted from medicating himself with alcohol. Peter found a way to use his family’s experience to draw attention to the damage that secrecy and shame can do to people with mental illness.
Watch the panel discussion from the night’s event featuring, Dr. Tere Garate- Senior Vice President of Gateway, Former Congressman Patrick Kennedy of the Kennedy Forum, Tom Britton- Gateway Foundation President & CEO and MADO’s own Meghan O’Brien Williams & Peter O’Brien.
